Linden Avenue's New Residents

Logansport’s Supported Group Living Home on Linden Avenue has been through a lot of changes in the past few months. They said good-bye to a few friends and gained some new ones.

David T. moved in from Wabash, where he had his own apartment. He decided that he needed a little more assistance. David has shown a great love of relaxation, his favorite activity in the home being down time after program objectives are met. He has also shown exactly what a hard worker he is.

David has adjusted very well to his new job in Work Services and continues to develop his job skills. David enjoys going to work and earning his own paycheck. He says the best thing about living at the group home is “It changed my attitude.” David says he now wants to learn to better control his health and other issues so he can someday have the skills to return to his own home in the community.

David E. is from Palestine, Indiana (which he very patiently explained was close to Warsaw after naming a few other smaller towns). He is a very friendly young man with a sharp and playful sense of humor. He also sounds very active! He has big plans for his new life in Logansport. He is interested in taking boxing or karate lessons and is also interested into getting into the Civic Players. (WATCH OUT JIM BAKER!) David is very open, friendly and charismatic, and he knows what he likes and what he wants to do. When I asked David “If you could do anything, what would you do,” he thought for a moment, looked me in the eye, smiled and said, “Show business… or wrestling.”

Anthony moved from Fish Lake, Indiana (which for some reason has a Walkerton address, according to Anthony!). Despite these Indiana roots, it’s easy to tell that Anthony’s heart is in Florida and just with his family in general. Having grown up in West Hollywood, Florida, Anthony said he also has family in Fort Myers. Family and friends, people, in general, are very important to Anthony. He has done well with friends since moving in late August, having become close friends with housemate Jason. One of the most exciting things that has happened to Anthony since he came to Peak Community Services is that the Work

Services Program provided him with his FIRST paycheck. What an accomplishment! Anthony is looking forward to the opportunity to play basketball in Special Olympics and, of course, spending the holidays with his family.

What a stellar group. Welcome to Peak Community Services!

Six Men, One Camp, S’Mores And No Fish

One Friday in August, two Peak Community Services staff members went camping with six consumers.

Normally, this would not be anything spectacular to write about, because it actually happens quite often. What makes this trip special is that most of them had never been camping before.

Elvin & Timer Funk; Donald, Nelson and Owen Reaker; and Eddie Eberhart (the youngest of the group) went on this camping adventure with staff members Debra Copp and Ray Russell.

Avoiding that hot summer sun, they arrived at the campground in Monticello in the late afternoon and set up camp.

There was a one-room cottage and a classic Airstream camper in which to sleep and prepare meals.

They gathered firewood to build a campfire for the traditional hot dogs and marshmallow roast (with s’mores). Is it even legal to camp in Indiana without making s’mores?

On Saturday the group went to Norway Dam in hopes of catching some fish. They didn’t have much luck with that, but they did get to enjoy a fish and salad bar dinner at Anglers, which was just as fun. So much for the primitive campground I had in mind....

Actually, I asked Elvin about the fishing trip. According to him, it was too cold for the fish to be biting. I think he might have meant that the fish were enjoying the cool water and didn’t want to come to the surface on that very, very hot August afternoon.

He was a little disappointed that he was unable to bring his lady love along with him on the trip.

All in all, it was a great adventure and they all hope to enjoy a camping trip again. Maybe next time the fish will be biting and they will have the opportunity to learn how to clean the fish and prepare them for cooking. Ick!

And maybe because they were thinking that if they actually caught something they would have to clean it, the guys were happy to return Saturday night to enjoy the comforts of home.
