EXCUSE ME?

We have been beating the drum since 2004. In perfect rhythm we can chant, “There are 15,500 men, women and children with developmental disabilities in the State of Indiana on waiting lists for services. They can be on a list for 10 years or longer.”

Until now, we continued to use 15,500 as the number, even though we assumed to some degree it was no longer correct.

We knew the list would grow as infants and toddlers were diagnosed with developmental disabilities (DD), young adults graduated from special education classes, and older adults needed a living situation because of aging parents.

Ellen's Last Message

As this article is my “swan song” let me try to explain what being a member of the Peak Community Services Board of Directors has meant to me.

I became a service member at the invitation of Jim Callaghan and Sharon Nelson, starting January 2000.

Indiana Continues To Move Toward Centralization of Services

The State of Indiana hired the accounting firm of Davis-Deshaies to initiate a new system for determining the services a consumer receives and the rate of reimbursement.

Providers in Florida who experienced the Davis-Deshaies process suggest we will have a reduction in rates of payment and consumers will have fewer services. An exercise in Indiana in the 1970s and 1990s resulted in exactly that.

Six Men, Camp, S'Mores & No Fish

One Friday in August, two Peak Community Services staff members went camping with six consumers.

Normally, this would not be anything spectacular to write about, because it actually happens quite often. What makes this trip special is that most of them had never been camping before.

Linda's Message

A foundation, in the broadest sense of the word, is a basis upon which something stands or is supported. If the “something” that is supported is important, then it is mandatory that the foundation be strong.

A strong foundation is not built in a day. It is built layer upon layer in a slow, careful process that assures that it will last through time.
