The Foundation is a Reality
By: Ellen Bland, President of the Board

I am proud to announce the official formation of the Peak Community Services Foundation. As of March, it is a free-standing incorporated entity. The Foundation’s Board of Directors is comprised of six highly qualified individuals: Larry Beach, Chad Geer, Linda Leasure, Millie Redweik, Janet Thomson, and Don Weikle. A seventh is yet to be appointed.

Peak Community Services has made a significant contribution to the Foundation. As a provider of services, we cannot assume the burden of support for the 150 individuals from Cass and Pulaski Counties, any of whom could be on waiting lists for 10 years. Depending on the type and level of service needed, the cost could run to millions of dollars each year. We can afford to do something.

Pulaski County Honors

Recently, Peak Community Services was named the Non-Profit Business of the Year by the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce. This was a distinct and high honor for our organization, and I was pleased to accept the award on behalf of the staff and consumers of the agency.

It is not often that human services are recognized as an important part of the business community. Too often non-profit organizations are seen as an unnecessary expense, as nice but expendable. I am pleased that the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce recognized the vital role Peak Community Services plays in the community.

Focus On...
Bobby Knapp

Bobby is one of the most talented and flexible employees at Work Services. He enjoys doing several jobs and is one of the highest production workers. He has worked here since high school graduation in the late 1980s. At first, he was very shy and hesitant, but he learned that he is very competent. He now tries anything new without hesitation.

Bobby does several jobs for Total Electronics. On the day of the interview, he was working on “liquid bubbles.” He also does transmission rings for Matthew-Warren, springs for Myers Spring, shredding jobs...he works on everything.

Heroes Among Us: Kim & Kati

How often do we have the opportunity to be heroes? Two women at the Winamac Women’s Group Home had an opportunity recently, but they are taking it all in stride. Here’s the story.

One night, when most of the residents were in bed, one had an intensive seizure. Tammy McCann, a staff member on duty that night, was assisting the woman at the time the seizure occurred, but she realized that she needed help. The other staff person was busy with another resident in another part of the house and did not hear Tammy’s cries for help.

What Is The Foundation?

15,500 individuals with developmental disabilities are on waiting lists for services in the State of Indiana. They can be on those waiting lists for as long as 10 years. This could be:

10 years from the day an infant is born and diagnosed with a developmental disability.

10 years from the day a toddler significantly slows in development and is diagnosed with a disability.

10 years from the day a young adult graduates from high school special education classes to go home and slowly lose the skills gained over 12 – 15 years.

10 years from the day elderly parents decide it is time for their middle-aged child to find a living situation before they can no longer provide a home.
